TOMMY EMMANUEL | Wednesday, November 8
With David Grisman
Esteemed and acclaimed Grammy Award-winning guitarist TOMMY EMMANUEL is touring across North America this year in support of his latest album LIVE! AT THE RYMAN and will be stopping locally in ANN ARBOR on WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 8 to perform at the MICHIGAN THEATRE on the CGP & Dawg Tour with world-renowned acoustic musician David Grisman and special guests Rob Ickes and Trey Hensley.
Filled with his complex fingerstyle technique and energetic performances, the new album (released May 19 via CGP Sounds) captures a special night of music in Nashville, TN on February 27, 2016 at the historic Ryman Auditorium. LIVE! AT THE RYMAN highlights EMMANUEL’S fervor as a master guitarist and also encapsulates a landmark moment for the musician as he is joined on stage by Steve Wariner and John Knowles, the only other two living CGPs (Certified Guitar Players: the honor and moniker Chet Atkins assigned not only to himself but four other guitarists he admired and felt contributed to the legacy of guitar playing) for a performance of “San Antonio Stroll.” Prior to the album’s release, GuitarWorld.compremiered the performance video of that special moment--the only time all three living CGPs shared the stage. You can click here to watch.
TOMMY also partnered with Rolling Stone Country to premiere the performance video of “Tall Fiddler” from the album; Click here to watch the video. Of the “Tall Fiddler” performance, Rolling Stone Country’s Jon Freeman said, “Emmanuel gives a typically dazzling performance...what begins as an impressive display of his picking mastery - neatly articulated arpeggios with some funky, percussive strums and that quickly loping melody - transforms into something mind-boggling as Emmanuel speeds up the tune by double and does it all again” (5/15/17).
"It was an unforgettable experience playing my first solo show at the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville,” says TOMMY EMMANUEL. “I have grown up listening to the music and artists that made those walls famous throughout the world and it was an honor to play on that stage. The night was a lifetime goal of mine and it was made that much more special with the appearance of my two good friends and fellow ‘CGPs,’ Steve Wariner and John Knowles. I'm so thrilled that we filmed and recorded the show, as John, Steve and I had never collaborated together before and this made the night even more special. The sold-out crowd just about lifted the roof off the hall and we all gave it our best! The spirit of Chet Atkins surrounded us three with love, peace and mojo! I hope those who hear this recording will be uplifted and feel the love we felt for the people who poured their joy into the Ryman Auditorium that February night!"
LIVE! AT THE RYMAN has received critical praise with Iain Patience from ELMORE MAGAZINE noting, “Emmanuel has—at long last—delivered an album that captures the striking essence of his live sets for the first time, a long overdue addition to his remarkable catalogue of work. With Live at the Ryman, recorded in Nashville’s famed historic Ryman Auditorium, he brings his truly astonishing talent and take to the musical table with a feast of genuinely jaw-dropping play and performance.Anyone who has caught this guy live will know just what an amazing picker Emmanuel really is and will also positively delight in this marvelous release…Pretty much the perfect acoustic guitar geek’s album, a truly wonderful offering that simply astonishes and amazes at every turn with each successive track” (5/19/17).
