AND TECHNOLOGY MEET
ANNOUNCES TWO NEW FESTIVAL STOPS
FOR ITS WORLD TOUR THIS FALL WITH
III POINTS IN MIAMI AND
CLUB TO CLUB FESTIVAL IN TORINO, ITALY
CLOSE COMES TO MOVEMENT IN DETROIT
THIS MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND
RICHIE HAWTIN CLOSE - Spontaneity & Synchronicity explores the relationship between human creativity and the innovative technologies that enable the freedom of improvisation. This week, it has been announced CLOSE will participate at two additional festivals as part of its world tour-iii Points in Miami this October where he will join The XX, Gorillaz, Nicolas Jaar and Brian Eno as a headlinerand the Club To Club Festival in Torino, Italy in November where he will headline with Kraftwerk and Nicolas Jaar.
CLOSE will next take place with a headlining slot at America's leading underground festival MOVEMENT in Detroit --the city where HAWTIN began his career as a curious and fanatical young DJ from across the border in Windsor, Canada. Challenging the distinction between DJing and live performance, RICHIE HAWTIN's new 75-minute audio-visual show takes you closer to his unique way of performing. Using intimately placed cameras this man versus machine relationship unfolds onscreen in real-time bringing the audience closer than before to HAWTIN's intuitive gestures.
The Canadian artist debuted the show at both weekends of COACHELLA this past April where it received outstanding support from the press (see below):
Other festivals and venues that will present the show include: The Sydney Opera House for the highly-regarded Vivid LIVE cultural festival where HAWTIN will perform CLOSE on the serene Northern Broadwalk, with the Sydney Harbour Bridge in the background and surrounded by 270-degree water views; the Pitchfork Stage at PRIMAVERA SOUND in Portugal; MELT in Berlin for the event's 20th Anniversary; HAWTIN's debut at WE LOVE GREEN in Paris; And a long-awaited return to CREAMFIELDS in the U.K. to headline the award-winning Steelyard structure which will be HAWTIN's only British festival date in 2017. Full dates are listed below.
HAWTIN's career has continually evolved and innovated over the last 25 years through his own music as Plastikman, his co-creation of Final Scratch which led the huge shift of DJing to digital, a co-founder of the Beatport retail platform and more recently the analogue MODEL 1 mixer he designed for his own PLAYdifferently technology company. Co-designed with Andy Rigby-Jones, who designed the X-One for Allen & Heath, the MODEL 1 has seen many of the world's most creative DJs change their central choice of instrument after many years. In recent times as a performer, HAWTIN took Plastikman to the Guggenheim in New York, performed at the Grand Palais in Paris in response to work by sculptor Anish Kapoor and recently worked on two sound installations with famed German artist / photographer Andreas Gursky.
CLOSE in the press:
"Canadian techno maestro Richie Hawtin used the Coachella platform to debut an entire new project, CLOSE: Spontaneity & Synchronicity. What has kept Hawtin (and his Plastikman alter alias) relevant for two decades in the fickle world of electronic dance music is his unique ability to evolve. Just because you saw a Hawtin set 20 or 15 or five years ago doesn't mean you'll have any idea of what you will witness next. The Close concept is both sonic and visual. Strategically placing various cameras around his rig, the idea is to give viewers a more intimate view of how he summons his music from his hard drive and manipulates it for the audience. In the three screens behind him, you could see Hawtin's hands triggering buttons, selecting tracks and performing the basic knob twiddles. Visually, the uniformity of the presentation eliminated the visual flare that defines so many EDM performances."
- Nic Stecher, Rolling Stone (4/17/17)
"Richie Hawtin has never been one to sit on his laurels. Over the course of a multi-decade career spanning varied locales like Detroit, Berlin and Ibiza, the Windsor native has always prioritized pushing things forward by evangelizing new technologies and broadening the boundaries of live electronic music performance. He delighted techno fans with his latest CLOSE live show concept on Coachella's Mojave Stage, combining, digitizing and manipulating multiple video feeds of his onstage controller setup, which included his purely analog PLAYdifferently MODEL 1 mixer."
- Billboard (4/18/17)
"Richie Hawtin debuted his highly-anticipated audiovisual show CLOSE at Coachella over the weekend and did not disappoint with unveiling the captivating concept. Using video mapping technology, viewers are presented with a unique perspective of Richie's live performance. The visuals reveal his actual movements on stage, with a variety of angles and views of his gear as he executes the live show."
- Harrison Williams, Mixmag (4/18/17)
"While live electronic music is beginning to become almost as prevalent as DJ sets in the current era, there is currently no performance which matches the elaborate echelon which Hawtin has reached with CLOSE. As the spontaneity of his cerebral techno improvisations met with the synchronicity of his compelling visual production, Hawtin's new live project lived up to its name more than duly."
- Will McCarthy, Dancing Astronaut (4/15/17)
