With lyrics described by critics as “edgy poetry” and a voice described as both “soulful and haunting” and “soothing and accessible,” Lia Menaker’s music is a unique blend of pop, rock, and blue-eyed soul—with a dash of theatrical flair. Think Joni Mitchell meets Fiona Apple in an old cabaret club.

Menaker will be performing live at Plymouth Coffee Bean (884 Penniman Ave.) on Friday, Aug. 25, at 8:00 p.m. The show is free and will feature original music from her debut album Animal Behavior along with several unreleased tunes.

With a background in musical theatre, Menaker has been composing music for nearly 15 years. She has performed and recorded with multiple bands and was co-lead vocalist for New Jersey-based folk/rock band Broken Darling from 2011-2013. When Broken Darling released its self-titled EP, Menaker was praised for her strong vocals; a reviewer from the Jersey Beat called her “an undiscovered star.” In 2015, after 12 years of songwriting, Menaker stepped onto the music scene as a solo artist, releasing the full-length album Animal Behavior. One critic described her music as “spirited theatricality”; another compared listening to the album to “sitting at home with a nice bottle of wine next to the fire.”

But despite all of this, Menaker spent years believing she simply wasn’t supposed to build a career around music. In fact, she stayed relatively quiet after the release of her album, performing only sporadically in an effort to find a “normal career” and live a “normal life.”

“Just over a year ago, I took a 9-to-5 office job that sounded like a dream on paper. It was a real stepping stone for what could've turned into a great public health career. But after a year, I just felt completely depleted and disconnected,” she says. “That’s when I woke up and realized I was living someone else’s life. I knew it was time to redefine what ‘normal’ means to me—it was time to re-enter the music scene, but this time with a fierceness and reclaimed vigor I had spent years running away from.”

If Menaker's release was a toe dip into the vast ocean of the music scene, then her upcoming tour represents a cannonball plunge.

“It’s the celebration of being a square peg in a round hole,” she says. “It’s a fearless step out into the light where I can turn up the volume on my voice without apologizing. It’s laughter in the face of a society that tries to tell us how we ‘should’ live. And it’s the end of one chapter and the start of a new one.”

Menaker recently returned to the studio to record brand new music, and plans to release it after the tour, in January 2018. To learn more about Lia Menaker and her music, visit Animal Behavior is available on iTunes, Spotify, Amazon, etc. and can also be heard on Bandcamp:
