ON YOUR FEET! Is based on the Life, love and music of EMILIO & GLORIA ESTEFAN. GLORIA ESTEFAN has seven Grammy Awards and more than 100 million albums sold worldwide. From Cuba to Miami, together this power couple shares their story of love, family and their journey to stardom in the hit Musical ON YOUR FEET! This musical is about the award-winning husband-and-wife team of Gloria and Emilio Estefan, the book was written by Alexander Dinelaris and the score is built around the Cuban-fusion pop music made famous by Gloria Estefan, featuring songs such as "Get on Your Feet", "Conga", "1-2-3" and "Rhythm Is Gonna Get You."

I recently spoke with ensemble member Sarita Colon. Sarita is a Michigan native who grew up in the town of Midland. She is the youngest of 4 girls and said music has always been a big part of her life. She and her sisters all took dance lessons as young girls, Sarita said she always knew that music and dance would be part of her career path. “Performing is just in my blood, my family was always singing and dancing, I have just always been around it,” said Sarita. She continued with dance classes and received a scholarship for dance and for academics to Wayne State University in Detroit where she graduated with a double major.
I asked Sarita if there was a message for the audience in this show. She said, “Its such fun show, it’s about love and family, I think everyone can relate to some part of it. I think the story of the show is also a message in its self. This show is so relevant to what’s happening in our country right now about immigrants coming to the United States, wanting to start a new life, and live the American Dream. I think that’s what separates this musical from others, we are touring the country with primarily a Latino cast, it’s a huge statement, and this show has been well received in all the cities we have performed in all over the country.”
Sarita spoke about getting to meet the Estefan’s and what an amazing experience it was to see a singer whom she grew up listening to, “I’m Puerto Rican, so Gloria’s music was a staple in our house growing up, I remember seeing her on TV. We just loved her in our house hold”. I asked Sarita if Gloria gave her any words of advice, she said “She wants us to always be true to the story and to give our all. We are primarily a Latino cast, its such a proud moment for all of us to get to tell her story, all of us are Latinos growing up in this country, and we all have similarities, she wants us to be proud of that.”
Sarita is looking forward to coming home to the Detroit area, for the first time in 5 years and seeing all the new developments within the city. She wants to go to Comerica Park and see a Tigers games and check out some of the new restaurants in town. She is excited to be performing for the first time at Detroit’s own Fisher Theatre as part of ON YOUR FEET! Her messages to readers about this show is, “It’s a party, It’s a concert! You can’t help but move to the music in your seats.” Come out and see Sarita salsa in ON YOUR FEET! Playing at The Fisher Theatre May 1-13th 20018.
